Afraid of starting a new job

Afraid of starting a new job

Are you nervous about starting your new job? Then it's probably reassuring to be told this is how other new employees feel too. It’s the insecurity and the unknown, the fact that you have come out of your comfort zone that makes you feel like you have butterflies in your stomach.

But as I said, there is no need to be nervous. Your new colleagues have been through the same experience when they started their new job. In addition, you can count on your new employer to do everything they can to facilitate a smooth onboarding for you. The better you feel, the faster you will feel confident and comfortable and your efficiency and productivity will increase.

As a newcomer to the job, you won’t master everything from day one. Things take time to learn. If you make a mistake, tell someone and try not to repeat it.  In other words, you are expected to learn from your mistakes, you can also learn from the experience of your colleagues.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

First day at work

Is it normal to be scared to start a new job?

Most important of all: Remember to be yourself when you arrive on your first day. This does not mean that you should look like you are coming home from a big festival. You just have to be neat and presentable. If you are in doubt about what to wear, for example classic, hipster or casual, think back to your job interview. How were the employees dressed? If still in doubt, go to business location and whilst keeping a distance see how the employees are dressed when they go to or from work.

It is also a good idea to be open and accommodating. Wait a while to tell jokes until you've been at work for some time start to have a good relationship with your new colleagues. If you get an invitation to something, join in with a smile and see if it’s something you enjoy, it’s a great way to network too.

How do I get over my fear of a new job?

If you stick to these 2 rules, then your fear will decline:

  1. The most important one: Don’t expect to know everything from day one
  2. Remember that everyone has experienced a first day in a new job and you won’t be new forever

We wish you all the best for your new job.
