How to write a cover letter?

When writing a cover letter, make sure that the following points are stated

  • Contact details
  • Use the same layout for the application and CV
  • How long should an application be? Companies prefer that the length of an application be a maximum of one page

In relation to the content of your application

  • Make a headline
  • The first section is about your motivation for applying and creating value in the company
  • Tailor your application for this particular job and this company, write the company name and the person you spoke to on the phone. Use formulations such as: With you (company name) you will experience ... - as this describes a future where the company can already see you working for them
  • Write a section about you and your personality
  • End your cover letter with a positive flourish
Since the first point of our cover letter is to: Make a headline - we'll go in depth with that now.

How to start a cover letter?

Maybe you have asked yourself how do I write a good cover letter?

Firstly you start with a catchy statement like

  • Stadium manager aiming for new goals
  • Successful sales manager will extend your market share
  • Breaking news! Award-winning journalist as your new TV-host
  • Detail oriented accountant with numerous skills

Your headline does not have to be creative in terms of puns like above.

But it’s good if your headline:

  • Includes your core competencies
  • Stands out from the other applicants
  • Omits vague words such as: "Has flair for" - "maybe" - "if"

Cover letter example

After writing your eye catching headline, you need to explain your motivation in applying for the job, which you will do in your opening paragraph.

It’s about creating value for the company. So let's look at some examples.

  • Cover letter example for nurses:
    • I am applying for the position of nurse in the pediatric ward.  I am empathetic and good at communicating with both the children and their parents
  • Cover letter example retail store
    • I am looking for a job as a customer service employee as I love engaging with people and providing great service. I see any complaint as an opportunity to provide an even better and improve process
  • Cover letter for a nursery teacher
    • As a nursery teacher, I am both creative, playful and have a natural authority. Therefore, I do not have to raise my voice to obtain calmness among the children. As you are looking for  a pedagogue with trusting behavior, I would like to be part of the team to make (the kindergarten's name) become the parents' preferred choice in the local area

Once you have detailed your motivation in applying for the job, you are ready to write the next section, namely something about how you are as a person and how it fits with the job, as described in the job advertisement.

How is my personality?

We are not all the same in terms of personality, so what is your personality?

Are you

  • Introvert or extrovert?
  • Calm or worried?
  • Do you see opportunities or limitations?

How do you react in certain situations, because this is how you will react when you are at work

In the personal section, do not just write the adjectives that are highlighted in the job advertisement.

Feel free to use synonyms and several adjectives that describe you.

Remember to clarify how your personality traits are going to be a positive in relation to the tasks that you will be undertaking. For example

  • How are you service-minded?
  • How do you work in a structured way?

You have now almost completed your cover letter, now we just need to understand how to wrap it up.

How to end a cover letter?

You end a good cover letter by showing that you trust yourself and have self-confidence. It gives a good impression.

For example, you can end your cover letter by writing:

  • I hope to be invited for an interview
  • I would be delighted to hear from you if you think my experience may be of benefit to your company. Thank you for your consideration

As you can see, you can choose how effervescent you want to be. What you write should be reflected in your personality, don’t present yourself one way on paper and then be a different person at the interview, because the interviewer will not be convinced of who you really are.

However, one may well be too effervescent. For example, do not write:

  • Call me when I need to be at job interview
  • Contact me when I've got the job

Alternatively you can just write, I am very much looking forward to hearing from you, as the next natural step is that you hear from the company.  They may invite you to an interview or regret your application and the process will stop.
