What is HR?

Human Resources is often abbreviated to HR and means personnel department. It is the department in the company that is responsible for the employees, including wellbeing and engagement. The HR department is also typically responsible for recruiting and hiring new employees.

The employees are the driving force behind the workplace and are a crucial resource in terms of competitiveness. It is therefore important that the employees experience a wellfunctioning workplace. What is HRM?

Human Resource Management is the management of the company's employees and corresponds in a Danish translation to personnel administration. HRM includes the recruitment of new employees and thus the HRM tasks can be divided into two general categories, namely:

  • The organisation's employees
  • New employees

HRM is typically associated with employee performance interviews, personality tests and satisfaction surveys.

You have now acquired a good understanding of what the terms HR and HRM entail. In the next section, we will go further into the tasks that the HR department deals with.

What tasks do HR employees have?

One of the primary tasks as an HR employee is to retain the company's employees. This can be done by establishing or maintaining a strong corporate culture, including a healthy physical, social and psychological working environment. The HR department can do this based on the following 5 tasks:

  1. Maintaining or establishing a healthy company culture: The healthy company culture can be defined in several ways, but one of the crucial ingredients is that the HR department finds the employees who fit into the company. It can, among other things, be done through a thorough recruitment and onboarding process. HR is also responsible for creating a wellfunctioning social working environment, e.g. in the form of company parties or social events
  2. Motivate the company's employees: Human Resources must ensure that the organisation's employees are motivated. This is important in terms of productivity, but it also ensures that employees do not change jobs. The HR employees can work to motivate the company's employees by delegating tasks that suit the employees' interests and skills
  3. Create good wellbeing: Good wellbeing also plays a decisive role when it comes to employee retention. In this context, one of the HR tasks is to help the employees to make the workplace a pleasant place to be. HR must also identify and improve employee wellbeing, e.g. via performance interviews, professional mentorship  promotions, pay and development offers
  4. Ensure fair terms: HR also helps to prepare and communicate personnel law, e.g. employment contracts, non-competition clauses and collective agreements. In addition, HR can help design the personnel handbook. You can read more about what a staff handbook contains here
  5. Establish a healthy physical working environment: Finally, it is also HR's responsibility to ensure that the physical working environment is optimal. It can, among other things, involve decisions regarding meeting rooms, quiet zones or ventilation

How does HR recruit new employees?

If your company plans to employ one or more new employees, the HR department typically helps to initiate the recruitment process.

The recruitment process consists of, among other things, creating job advertisements and job interviews. Here, the HR department prepares job advertisements based on a job and profile analysis that clarifies what characterises the preferred applicant. HR can also be responsible for publishing job advertisements on various online channels, for example Facebook and LinkedIn or online job portals such as Findjobhub.

In mediumsized and large companies, it is also typically HR employees who review the applications and select the profiles that best suit the company.
