Student assistant

Student assistant jobs are very popular among students. Both at upper secondary school level, but also shorter educations, bachelor's and master's level.

Therefore, there are many students who fight for the same jobs as student assistants. But don't despair. Whether you succeed in finding a student assistant job is not just about your grade level. On the other hand, it is also about a number of other things.

Study relevant work

  • If you are only looking for study relevant work, then there may be a bottleneck. In that case, try to open up the bottleneck more. Instead of just going for a certain field of study, think creatively. Can you help create a job that the company doesn't currently know they need?

Large versus small business

  • There is competition for large and well known companies, as these companies can be good references on your CV. You could try instead to pitch to a smaller company where you can do something different. A smaller company does not have to be worse for you compared to a large company. Rather, it is the competences in the company that are decisive. Example: It may well be that there is not an HR department, but there is probably someone with personnel responsibility in the company

Location

  • If you are only looking for a student assistant job in the centre of the city where you are studying, then you are doing the same as the vast majority of other students. Therefore, the demand for jobs is much higher in the city centre than if you are looking for your student assistant job just 5 -10 kilometers away from the city centre

What is a student assistant?

Many students and employers are not sure what a student assistant really is, so let's create a student assistant definition:

As a student assistant, you typically work no more than 10 - 15 hours per week. The job can be relevant to studies, but does not have to be. In most cases, the job will be paid.

How long can you be a student assistant?

There is basically no lower or upper limit for how many hours a student assistant can work, but if you ask the universities, they say a maximum of 15 hours per week. This is to ensure that there is both time for lectures and preparations for them, as well as a social life alongside your studies.

In this context, it is also interesting to ask yourself if you are a civil servant as a student assistant?

This is only the case if the weekly number of hours in the study job and the nature of the tasks means that it is defined at white collar status.

For absolute clarification depending on your own work situation, you can ask your union for further guidance.

The private sector

  • As a starting point, you should not count on an agreement being made. This means that you must negotiate your salary yourself. As an indicator, you can use an hourly wage in the range of DKK 120-140. Meanwhile, some individual students manage to get a slightly higher hourly wage, as their labour force is at a premium.
