Interview preparation

Preparing for an interview is crucial to present yourself in the best possible light and increase your chances of success. Here are some important things to do before an interview:

  1. Research the company: We went through this topic in the former paragraph. It's a cornerstone to help you obtain a successful outcome

  2. Understand the job description: Familiarise yourself with the job requirements, responsibilities and qualifications. This will enable you to align your skills and experiences with the position and effectively communicate your suitability during the interview

  3. Review your CV and cover letter: Refresh your memory on the details of your application materials. Be prepared to discuss your experiences, accomplishments and skills mentioned in your resume. Identify key points you want to emphasise during the interview. Print a handful of copies and take with you to the interview, sometimes interviewers don’t have your CV to hand, you can politely present them with a copy

  4. Practise common interview questions: Prepare answers for common interview questions such as "Tell me about yourself," "Why are you interested in this position" and "What are your strengths and weaknesses." Practice articulating your responses confidently and concisely

  5. Prepare questions to ask: Research thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer. This demonstrates your interest, engagement and desire to learn more about the company and the role. Avoid asking questions about salary or benefits at this stage

  6. Plan your logistics: Determine the interview location, time and method (in person, phone, or video). If it's an in person interview, plan your route and transportation in advance. If you are driving be sure to know where you can park, larger companies may have visitor parking, you can ring reception to check. For virtual interviews, ensure you have a reliable internet connection, a quiet environment and the necessary technology and software. Be mindful of your background, keep it neutral and professional

  7. Gather necessary documents and materials: Organise any documents or materials you might need during the interview, such as extra copies of your CV, a portfolio of work samples, reference contacts or any other relevant documents. If you have letters of recommendation or references already, take copies and leave in a folder with the interviewer for them to peruse.

  8. Practice good self care: Get a good night's sleep before the interview to ensure you're well rested and alert. Eat a nutritious meal beforehand and stay hydrated. Engage in activities that help you relax and reduce stress, such as exercise, meditation or deep breathing

  9. Confidence building exercises: Boost your confidence by reminding yourself of your qualifications, accomplishments and positive attributes. Visualise a successful interview, focusing on your strengths and how you can contribute to the company

  10. Dress appropriately: Choose professional attire suitable for the industry and company culture. Dressing appropriately shows respect for the interview process and allow you to present yourself as a serious candidate. If the interview is in person be careful not to arrive smelling of cigarette smoke
  11. Be ready, be early.  No matter if the interview is in person or online, be early, ten minutes is a good guideline here. Remember, anyone can be part of the interview process on behalf of the company, be courteous and respectful to everyone you meet.  Your potential new line manager may be sitting in reception just watching how you interact with others as you sign in!

Remember, thorough preparation is essential, but it's equally important to be authentic and genuine during the interview.
