Lean Six Sigma

Lean Six Sigma is a methodology that combines the principles of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma to improve quality and efficiency in business processes. It focuses on identifying and eliminating waste and reducing variability in processes to achieve optimal performance.

Lean Manufacturing is a process improvement methodology that originated in the Toyota Production System in 1950. It emphasises the elimination of waste in manufacturing processes and seeks to improve efficiency by identifying and eliminating non value added activities.

Six Sigma is a data driven approach to quality improvement that focuses on reducing variability and defects in processes. It uses statistical methods to identify and measure process performance and to identify opportunities for improvement.

Combining the principles of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma seeks to create a culture of continuous improvement within an organization. It involves identifying and analysing processes, identifying areas of waste and inefficiency and implementing solutions to improve performance.

The ultimate goal is to improve customer satisfaction, reduce costs and increase efficiency and profitability.

So where do you start?

The belt system in Lean Six Sigma

In Lean Six Sigma, "belts" refer to individuals who have been trained in the methodology and have achieved different levels of certification based on their level of knowledge and expertise.

The belt system in Lean Six Sigma follows a similar hierarchy as martial arts, with individuals starting at the beginner level and progressing to higher levels as they gain more experience and expertise. The belt levels in Lean Six Sigma are:

  1. White Belt: This is the introductory level and provides a basic understanding of Lean Six Sigma concepts and terminology

  2. Yellow Belt: This level is designed for individuals who are involved in process improvement projects as team members. Yellow Belts have a fundamental understanding of Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques

  3. Green Belt: Green Belts lead process improvement projects and are responsible for implementing solutions to improve performance. They have a more in depth knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies and tools

  4. Black Belt: Black Belts are experts in Lean Six Sigma and are responsible for leading complex projects and mentoring and coaching other team members. They have a deep understanding of statistical analysis and are skilled in project management

  5. Master Black Belt: This is the highest level of certification in Lean Six Sigma. Master Black Belts are experts in the methodology and are responsible for leading multiple projects and coaching other Black Belts and Green Belts

While Lean Six Sigma can be a powerful tool for improving processes and increasing efficiency, there are some common challenges that your company may encounter during the implementation.

  1. Lack of leadership commitment: Without buy in and support from top management, Lean Six Sigma initiatives are unlikely to be successful. Leaders need to be fully committed to the process and provide the necessary resources to ensure success

  2. Failure to engage employees: Lean Six Sigma is a team based approach that requires participation and engagement from all employees. Failing to involve employees in the process can lead to resistance and a lack of buy in

  3. HRM: Lean Six Sigma is a long term process that requires ongoing commitment and attention. Failing to fully implement the process can lead to a lack of sustained improvement. As a human resource capability you have to allocate a significant time to implement the Lean Six Sigma, but the upside can be very profitable for your company and gain motivation among your employees
