Employee advocacy is about using employees as ambassadors for your company. As a starting point, it is not a project with a start and an end date. But if you measure how the applicants know your company, before you start employee advocacy, you have a good starting point for doing an A/B test. That is to say: After you have done employer advocacy for, for example, 1 year, you would like to start being able to measure an effect. 

In connection with the introduction of employee advocacy as part of the communication and recruitment strategy, you must be careful that the project fits your company and your employees. 

Working with employee advocacy involves many factors such as:

  • Company culture, and possibly a change thereof
  • Communication
  • Team and sense of community
  • Pride
  • Praise and recognition

Precisely, praise and recognition are one of the central points of employee advocacy y, but are there other ways in which you can motivate your employees to participate as ambassadors for your company?

Motivation of employees

When we talk about employee advocacy and employee motivation, one of the most difficult things is keeping employees engaged over a longer period of time. So what do you do?

You can create employee engagement in several different ways:

  • Employee involvement
  • Competitions

With employee involvement, you have at least four clear advantages. You create:

  1. Psychological security, so employees dare to share their own ideas with colleagues
  2. Interest in colleagues' ideas
  3. Understanding of diversity
  4. Reflection

The second tool for creating employee motivation is competitions.

As the project manager, it is you who sets the precedent:

  • If you already have a competitive and winning culture, then the competitive element is a completely natural part of everyday life
  • If the work culture is that we have to enjoy ourselves while we are at work, then the competitions should be more like a feature for a summer party or a Christmas party

In this context, you can consider:

  • Might big prizes have a negative effect?
  • Is it too difficult to achieve the winnings? If so, some employees will already early on get the feeling that they are far behind compared to the leaders in competition, which creates demotivation
  • What prize will motivate your employees? Find a balance between the employee who doesn't win avoiding being too upset, but on the other hand would like to have won the prize

Competitions that create job satisfaction

Here you will get 5 concrete ideas on how you can create competitions which lead to motivation and job satisfaction:

 

1. Hashtag challenge

  • The purpose of a hashtag challenge is to create a purpose. This is especially important for the younger part of the workforce, which you can read more about here. The method is also good for creating a sense of community, as everyone uses the same #hashtag, for example #MyJobAtCompanyX 
  • Make sure that the prize is for everyone, so that the sense of community is strengthened

2. LinkedIn bingo

  • As you can see in the picture on the right, there may be many employees. In that case, you can create a team for each row, so many teams compete against each other
  • You can choose to make a competition to be the first to finish, or get the most stars. If you choose the latter, you can give an extra large prize if all employees on the bingo board have done something active to create employee advocacy

3. LinkedIn Social Selling Index

  • On LinkedIn there is a Social Selling Index (SSI score). You can read more about that here
  • Reward the employee with the highest number of points

4. Comment challenge

  • Define the minimum number of comments to be made per week or month
  • Speak to the sense of community and get the employees to focus on the company's culture, professionalism, etc.
  • The prize is therefore also for everyone in the company

5. Post of the month

  • Give the prize to the colleague who has made the best post on social media.
  • You can choose to measure on:
    • Most interactions (likes - shares - comments)
    • Most applicants
